SEEC Blasts Republican Attack on Our Clean Air

April 17, 2026

Washington, D.C. – The leaders of the House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC), including Co-Chairs Reps. Doris Matsui, Mike Quigley, and Paul Tonko and Vice Chairs Reps. Don Beyer, Suzanne Bonamici, Sean Casten, Mike Levin, and Chellie Pingree, released the following statement in response to the House passage of two Republican-led bills — the FENCES Act (H.R. 6409) and the RED Tape Act (H.R. 6398) — that gut America’s longstanding Clean Air Act public health protections.

“This week, House Republicans decided that the American people do not deserve clean, safe air. For half a century, the Clean Air Act has been an American success story in driving economic prosperity and protecting our communities from life-threatening pollution.

“House Republicans want to turn back the clock to make Americans even sicker in the midst of Trump’s cost-of-living crisis. This is death by a thousand cuts. These bills would mask the true effects of cross-border air pollution and silence our scientists and experts at the Environmental Protection Agency from weighing in on air quality impacts of major projects. Turning a blind eye to hazardous air pollution will not make it go away, and will instead only make Americans sicker as the federal government sits idly by. This is just another perverse page from the Republican agenda to enrich Trump’s billionaires and special interest friends at the cost of American families.”
