Clean Energy Deployment
This task force will focus on studying and addressing impediments to the full deployment of cleaner, cheaper energy technology, especially in a time of increasing energy demand; protecting and building on the progress we have made thus far; and exploring potential grid modernization and clean energy reform policies. The goal will be to ensure cleaner, cheaper energy continues to be a key part of US energy independence.

Democrats are continuing to seize on the issue. [SEEC Vice Chair] Democratic Rep. Sean Casten of Illinois is a main co-sponsor of the Cheap Energy Act, which would restore clean energy tax credits, put guardrails around data center development to ensure companies are paying for the electricity they use, and provide energy assistance to millions of households who face electricity and gas shutoffs as their bills mount. Casten said he wanted to put forward a proactive plan for how Democrats would seek to lower bills, to give candidates something to run on.

A big bipartisan permitting reform deal may be in the offing in Washington. But getting it done will require taking away one of Donald Trump’s favorite toys: The power to mess with solar and wind permits. “Any deal hinges on the Trump administration providing assurances they’re not going to kill every single clean energy project in existence,” [SEEC Vice Chair] Representative Mike Levin told me on Tuesday.

Washington, D.C. – House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC) Clean Energy Deployment Task Force Co-Chairs, Rep. Mike Levin (CA-49) and Rep. Sean Casten (IL-06), led 163 House Democrats in a letter to Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Chris Wright condemning the termination of $8 billion of projects that were set to lower electricity costs for Americans and increase grid reliability. The lawmakers further demanded that DOE immediately reinstate the projects.

Sean Casten of Illinois and Mike Levin from California are preparing to introduce sweeping energy legislation that would reverse Trump administration policies, including by restoring clean energy tax credits and limiting the U.S. Department of Energy’s ability to declare “energy emergencies” to keep fossil-fueled power plants from retiring. The draft Cheap Energy Act aims to put downward pressure on electricity bills by bolstering energy efficiency efforts, supporting grid-enhancing technologies and helping provide lower-cost renewable energy projects access to the grid, according to Casten.
