SEEC Climate and National Security Task Force Statement on the House Passage of FY25 NDAA

June 14, 2024

Washington, D.C. – The Co-Chairs of the House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC) Climate and National Security Task Force, Rep. Andy Kim (D-NJ) and Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA), released the following statement in response to the House passage of H.R. 8070, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25 NDAA).

“The climate crisis is one of our nation’s biggest national security challenges; rolling back climate investments through partisan actions undermines our readiness and puts our nation at greater risk,” said Congressman Kim. “We can do better, and we must come together in a bipartisan way to address these threats and put America on a more sustainable, secure path.”

"Climate action and resilience are key to keeping Americans safe," said Congresswoman Porter. "Each year we fail to take action on climate, we have fewer options, and the options we do have are more costly. Instead of legislating to protect Americans, safeguard our troops, and steward taxpayer dollars, this House Republican majority has hijacked the NDAA amendment process to attack necessary environmental protections. This is a disappointing disservice to the American people."

Background

In April, the Task Force sent a letter to Chairman Mike Rogers (R-AL) and Ranking Member Adam Smith (D-WA) of the House Armed Services Committee urging for support of a robust national defense strategy that prioritizes military installation resilience, fortifies energy security, and protects the health and safety of our military personnel.
