SEEC Condemns Republican Effort to Undermine American-Built Electric Vehicle Infrastructure

January 11, 2024

Washington, D.C. – The leaders of the House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC), including Co-Chairs Reps. Doris Matsui, Mike Quigley, and Paul Tonko, Vice Chairs Reps. Don Beyer, Matt Cartwright, Sean Casten, Chellie Pingree, and Katie Porter, and Chair Emeritus Rep. Gerry Connolly, released the following statement after the passage of S.J. Res. 38, a joint resolution providing for congressional disapproval of the rule submitted by the Federal Highway Administration relating to “Waiver of Buy America Requirements for Electric Vehicle Chargers”.

“House Republicans have chosen to kick off the new year with a backward-looking resolution that attacks our home-grown electric vehicle (EV) market and undermines American leadership in building technologies of the future. This resolution harms domestic manufacturing and American jobs by eliminating the Biden Administration’s domestic manufacturing requirement for federally funded EV chargers. The Biden Administration issued guidance last year that would require for the first time that all federally funded EV chargers must undergo final assembly in the United States and contain 55 percent domestic content.

“When we passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law last Congress, we voted to ensure the $7.5 billion for EV chargers would work for our businesses and communities across the country. House Republicans have spoken loud and clear that they’d rather outsource our federal funds, create uncertainty for a burgeoning domestic market, and use American workers as a pawn in their political games.”
