SEEC Criticizes Republicans’ Assault on Affordable, American-Made Energy
Washington, D.C. – The leaders of the House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC), including Co-Chairs Reps. Doris Matsui, Mike Quigley, and Paul Tonko and Vice Chairs Reps. Don Beyer, Suzanne Bonamici, Sean Casten, Mike Levin, and Chellie Pingree, released the following statement in response to the House passage of Republicans’ Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2026 (H.R. 4553), which will undermine affordable, American-made energy and raise energy costs for American families.
“Despite skyrocketing energy costs, House Republicans returned to Congress this week to continue their reckless crusade against affordable, reliable energy made here in America. Since President Trump took office, Americans’ electricity bills have already increased by a staggering 10 percent and are poised to keep going up and up.
“Rather than advance serious solutions to address this looming crisis, House Republicans chose to double down on costly, dirty fossil fuels that will only exacerbate America’s affordability crisis and undermine our global leadership in clean energy technology innovation. This harmful bill intentionally hamstrings our clean energy programs, including slashing the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy programs in half, shutting down the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations, and revoking key funding directed at building out hydrogen, direct air capture, battery recycling, and other core technologies that would help build a more resilient and energy independent future. Meanwhile, China is pouring resources into low-cost, clean energy and rapidly solidifying their dominance over the clean energy economy of the future.
“House Republicans have once again chosen to side with polluters over their own constituents, boosting expensive fossil fuels at the expense of cheap, clean energy. We urge Republicans to stand up for their constituents and work with Democrats to lower prices for American families.”
