SEEC Decries Another Round of Irresponsible Republican Cuts to American Clean Economy
Washington, D.C. – The leaders of the House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC), including Co-Chairs Reps. Doris Matsui, Mike Quigley, and Paul Tonko, Vice Chairs Reps. Don Beyer, Matt Cartwright, Sean Casten, Chellie Pingree, and Katie Porter, and Chair Emeritus Rep. Gerry Connolly, released the following statement in response to the House passage of the Fiscal Year 2024 Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act (H.R. 4394).
“After three weeks of partisan chaos at the hands of Republican extremists, which left the House of Representatives ungovernable, House Republicans return to work only to demonstrate they’ve learned nothing about responsible governing. Instead of finding a bipartisan path forward to fund our government, House Republicans have returned to their partisan antics, advancing absurd federal budgets that — once again — cater to extremist right-wing demands.
“On the Republicans' chopping block this week are devastating cuts to cost-saving energy efficiency programs at the Department of Energy, innovative technologies funding for American manufacturers, and critical environmental cleanup activities. This means higher energy costs at home and decreased global competitiveness in the growing energy technology sector. In a true demonstration of priorities, Republicans even tacked on riders that would allow firearms on Army Corps of Engineers’ public lands and prohibit the release of home energy efficiency standards for clothes washers and cooking products.
“House Republicans continue to show no concern for the safety and economic well-being of our families. We at SEEC will stand ready at the negotiating table to pass meaningful bipartisan legislation that will lower energy bills, support a homegrown manufacturing sector, and promote American energy independence.”
