June 8, 2023

Washington, D.C. – The House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC) Nature and Oceans Task Force Co-Chair Rep. Doris Matsui and Task Force Member Rep. Suzanne Bonamici released the following statements in celebration of World Oceans Day 2023. To recommit Congress to protecting, conserving, and rebuilding our ocean resources, Rep. Bonamici led a bipartisan resolution calling for increased investments in scientific research and ocean monitoring.

“The health of the ocean reflects the health of the planet,” said Congresswoman Bonamici. “I’m leading the resolution to recognize World Oceans Day and to recommit Congress to guarding this essential resource and recognizing its potential to help address the climate crisis. Together we can protect the ocean so it can thrive with abundance and vitality for future generations.”

“Our oceans are foundational to our health and survival – they sustain us, regulate our climate, and act as our richest source of global biodiversity,” said Congresswoman Matsui. “This World Oceans Day, we must recommit to conserving our marine environments and combatting climate change with every tool at our disposal. Our oceans have a remarkable regenerative potential and they can help drive us towards a more sustainable future. That’s why we must continue to prioritize the resources and investments to protect the resiliency of our oceans and restore this precious resource.”
