SEEC Nature and Oceans Task Force Honors Biodiversity Day 2023

May 22, 2023

Washington, D.C. – The House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC) Nature and Oceans Task Force Co-Chairs, Rep. Doris Matsui and Rep. Joe Neguse, released the following statement in honor of International Day for Biological Diversity 2023. To reaffirm our nation’s commitment to conserving and restoring the planet’s biodiversity, the SEEC Nature and Oceans Task Force calls on President Biden to develop a coordinated interagency National Biodiversity Strategy, consistent with the National Biodiversity Strategy Resolution led by Rep. Joe Neguse and Rep. Jared Huffman. This Task Force supported resolution directs agencies to establish a coordinated national approach to protect our nation’s biodiversity, building upon President Biden’s America the Beautiful initiative to protect 30% of United States lands and oceans by 2030.

“Today, as we celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity, we recommit ourselves to tackling the decline in biodiversity, addressing damaged ecosystems, increased pollution, and the acceleration of climate change,” said Congressman Neguse. “It is my hope that the U.S. will adopt a whole-of-government approach, such as creating a National Biodiversity Strategy, that will build off of recent progress made in the fight against the climate crisis and ultimately address this pervasive issue – for our children, and for future generations.”

“International Day for Biological Diversity serves to remind us of how crucial it is to protect our planet’s biodiversity from the devastating impacts of climate change, ecosystem destruction, and pollution,” said Congresswoman Matsui. “We must preserve our ecosystems for our children, our grandchildren, and future generations after them. By establishing a National Biodiversity Strategy, we can position the U.S. as a leader in conservation and help guide international efforts. It is time for the U.S. to join the global community and strengthen our commitment to safeguarding the beautiful diversity of living things in our country and around the world.”
