SEEC Slams Yet Another Round of Damaging Pro-Pollution Anti-Environment Cuts by House Republicans

November 3, 2023

Washington, D.C. – The leaders of the House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC), including Co-Chairs Reps. Doris Matsui, Mike Quigley, and Paul Tonko, Vice Chairs Reps. Don Beyer, Matt Cartwright, Sean Casten, Chellie Pingree, and Katie Porter, and Chair Emeritus Rep. Gerry Connolly, released the following statement in response to the House passage of the Department of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2024 (H.R. 4821).

“For the second week in a row since electing a new Speaker, House Republicans have chosen once again to push for extreme cuts to key government programs that protect our environment and ensure the safety of our communities. This bill is just another example of Republican broken promises on bipartisan spending levels in order to harm our environment and the well-being of American families.

“The House Republicans’ hack-and-slash spending plan egregiously reduces the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) funding to levels not seen since 1991. This includes erasing $7.8 billion from Democrats’ historic climate law that is helping EPA invest in pollution-reducing technologies in our low-income and underserved communities. House Republicans further delivered an unimaginable $1.8 billion cut to the Clean and Drinking Water State Revolving Funds, which would make it harder for Americans to access clean and safe drinking water. This is an attack on the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the health and safety of our loved ones.

“Instead of delivering real solutions for the American people today, House Republicans have doubled down on their extreme partisan legislation that threatens the welfare of our families and turns a blind eye to the rapidly worsening climate crisis.”
