SEEC Statement on EPA Tier 3 Rule

March 3, 2014

Washington, D.C.—In response to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issuing final Tier 3 Motor Vehicle Emissions and Fuel Standards, the House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC) issued the following statement:

“SEEC welcomes today’s action by the EPA that will reduce the sulfur content in gasoline and improve the efficiency of our vehicles. The Tier 3 Motor Vehicle Emissions and Fuel Standards will bring needed relief to the 149 million Americans suffering unhealthy levels of air pollution, helping to prevent up to 2,000 premature deaths by 2030. Improving the quality of our air is not the only benefit of these new safeguards: reducing sulfur benefits consumers by enabling their vehicle’s catalytic converters to work more effectively. Additionally, Tier 3 provides the auto industry with a uniform national standard that will allow their vehicles to be sold across all 50 states.

“Clean air is good for public health, good for business, and good for the environment, which is why today's announcement was the result of collaboration by auto manufacturers, environmental groups, refiners, and state and local governments. We applaud those involved in this beneficial, common-sense effort and look forward to its implementation.”
