Statement on U.S. Submission to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change

March 31, 2015

Washington, D.C.– Today, the United States submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) a goal to reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 26-28 percent below 2005 emission levels by 2025. The goal submitted is consistent with GHG reductions included in last year’s U.S.-China joint announcement on climate change.

SEEC Members released the following statement:

“We strongly support the United States’ submission to the UNFCCC. This announcement signals to the world that an ambitious, but achievable global climate agreement is possible in Paris. Later this year the world’s developed and developing countries will meet again with the goal of forging a global agreement to limit global GHG emissions thereby avoiding the most devastating impacts of climate change.

While it is clear that the U.S. GHG reductions are achievable under existing law, we believe that Congress has a responsibility to not only support an agreement in Paris, but to actively pursue policies that will help exceed these goals, enabling the U.S. to be the world leader in clean energy, technology innovation, and green jobs.”
