As electricity prices rise in Maine, new federal legislation aims to reverse cuts to clean energy programs and help lower household energy bills. The “Energy Bills Relief Act” would undo many of the policies implemented through last year’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” and re-incentivize the adoption of renewable energy technologies. Matthew Davis, vice president of federal policy for the League of Conservation Voters, said it would restore historic tax credits for ratepayers and speed up the permitting process for solar and wind power projects.

Rising electricity bills in Iowa are putting pressure on household budgets. Lawmakers in Washington have introduced a proposal to tackle those rising costs. As winter protections begin to expire across Iowa, thousands of households are bracing for a spike in electricity shutoffs just as temperatures—and energy bills—start to climb. In 2025 alone, shutoff notices rose almost 10% compared to the year before, and close to 170,000 Iowa families were struggling to keep up with utility payments. With no statewide protections against shutoffs during extreme summer heat, and energy costs continuing to rise, the state could be heading into another season where losing power is a growing risk. With that in mind, federal lawmakers are proposing a new solution: the Energy Bills Relief Act, a bill aimed at lowering electricity costs and preventing more families from falling behind.

Rising electricity bills in Pennsylvania are putting pressure on household budgets and another round of rate increases is expected in June. Lawmakers in Washington have introduced a proposal to tackle those rising costs. Just months after electricity rates in Pennsylvania jumped as much as 10%, many households are still struggling to keep up. With rates set to increase again in June—just as the ACs are going on—relief may not be coming anytime soon.

From rising bills to growing demand, lawmakers say this proposal could reshape how energy works for Virginians. In Virginia, the pressure on the power grid isn’t theoretical. It shows up in consumers’ monthly utility bills, summer heat and winter freeze waves, and a surge of energy-hungry data centers reshaping entire communities.

With spiking gasoline prices now intensifying the pain of higher utility bills, there’s an effort afoot in Congress to rework some Trump administration rollbacks of clean energy policies.

A White House directive on artificial intelligence is putting renewed pressure on Congress to act on data center energy use worries.

Congressional leaders have not yet unified behind one approach to regulate the data centers that make artificial intelligence possible. It seemed unlikely any legislation would get serious consideration. That may all change.

House Democrats are putting their energy policy priorities forward in a new bill that’s being co-sponsored by more than half of their caucus.

The measure, led by Democratic Reps. Sean Casten (Ill.) and Mike Levin (Calif.) would restore climate-friendly energy tax credits repealed by Republicans and prevent the Trump administration from imposing burdens on renewables.

Lawmakers clashed Tuesday over the benefits of renewable energy versus fossil fuels as Democrats seek to amplify concerns about affordability ahead of the midterm elections.

House Energy and Commerce Republicans convened a hearing to tout the importance of fossil fuels during severe weather and GOP efforts to increase their production.

But Senate Democrats had an event of their own to trumpet renewables and accuse Republicans of making energy more expensive by undermining wind and solar, and going to war with Iran.

Democratic Reps. Sean Casten of Illinois and Mike Levin from California — and 120 other Democratic cosponsors — introduced a broad clean electricity bill Wednesday that would undo key Trump administration priorities, such as providing fast-track grid access for gas-fired power plants and keeping fossil-fueled power plants from retiring through “emergency” declarations.
