Washington, D.C.– Today, the United States submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) a goal to reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 26-28 percent below 2005 emission levels by 2025. The goal submitted is consistent with GHG reductions included in last year’s U.S.-China joint announcement on climate change.
SEEC Members released the following statement:
About 90 percent of the more than 100,000 oil and gas wells on our public lands use an extraction technique known as hydraulic fracturing or “fracking,” which involves the high pressure injection of water, sand, and chemicals deep underground. In recent years, fracking has contributed to the surge in U.S. fossil energy production, but the lack of strong, enforceable federal regulations have endangered our public lands, human health, and water resources.
President Obama has signed an Executive Order that aims to cut the Federal Government’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 40 percent over the next decade from 2008 levels -- saving taxpayers up to $18 billion in avoided energy costs. Several major Federal contracting partners are also announcing their plans to disclose and reduce GHG emissions throughout the Federal supply chain.

Serving his first term in the House, Rep. Beyer has an established record as an environmental leader, having previously served as U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland, and as a member of the Virginia Governor’s Commission on Climate Change. Rep. Beyer said of joining SEEC:
