Sean Casten of Illinois and Mike Levin from California — and 120 other Democratic cosponsors — introduced a broad clean electricity bill Wednesday that would undo key Trump administration priorities, such as providing fast-track grid access for gas-fired power plants and keeping fossil-fueled power plants from retiring through “emergency” declarations.

U.S. House Democrats proposed legislation on Wednesday to restore clean energy tax credits revoked by Republicans last year through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The “Energy Bills Relief Act,” signed by more than half of House Democrats, 122 in all, seeks to establish new incentives for renewable projects and to protect consumers from rising electricity costs due to grid demands from large energy users such as data centers.

Democrats are continuing to seize on the issue. [SEEC Vice Chair] Democratic Rep. Sean Casten of Illinois is a main co-sponsor of the Cheap Energy Act, which would restore clean energy tax credits, put guardrails around data center development to ensure companies are paying for the electricity they use, and provide energy assistance to millions of households who face electricity and gas shutoffs as their bills mount. Casten said he wanted to put forward a proactive plan for how Democrats would seek to lower bills, to give candidates something to run on.
